Nina Bermuda 2

She played one of the most captivating and intriguing femme fatales in the history of daytime television — and the mystery of Cassandra Rawlins was finally resolved at the conclusion of what remains one of the medium’s top-rated storylines, “The Bermuda Love Triangle”, shot on location on the island.

With her sculpted Scandinavian features and lion’s mane of tawny blonde hair, Norwegian-American actress Nina Arvsesen was an immediate stand-out when she joined CBS’ “The Young & The Restless” in 1988 — a daytime drama never wanting for alluring actresses.

But it was the fact she was a throwback to the classic 1940s film noir anti-heroines played by the likes Gene Tierney, Barbara Stanwyck and Rita Hayworth rather than just her classical elegance which grabbed the attention of audiences — and sent the venerable soap opera’s ratings ticking upwards.

Ms Arvesen brought an edgy intensity and enigmatic quality — what’s been referred to as “beauty lurking in the shadows” – to the role of Cassandra; her impenetrable air of mystery stood in stark contrast to the actress’ super-abundance of outdoor good looks and the furlongs of toned legs which seemed to go on forever.

Born in the United States to a Norwegian career diplomat and his former actress wife, Ms Arvesen grew up all over the world as a result of her father’s international postings.

“Before I moved back to the United States, I’d had my own talk show in Norway for three years and I had worked as an actress in Egypt, Brazil, Costa Rica and Norway,” she told Bernews. “I made the decision to leave Norway in 1986 to pursue my dream of pursuing an acting career in the United States ..

“But the casting directors in the United States refused to accept my overseas acting credits, so when I moved to the US I had to start all over again as an actress; I finally got my first US acting credit — and my Screen Actors Guild [SAG] membership card — in the 1987 movie “Dragnet” with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks.”

Ms Arvesen — a classically trained pianist who also studied ballet as a youngster — joined the cast of “The Young & The Restless” the following year.

“I’d been testing for soaps for quite some time,” she said. “I’d read for the ABC soaps in New York, for ‘General Hospital and ‘Bold and the Beautiful’ when they were first casting.

“Then I heard ‘Young and the Restless’ was casting for Cassandra. I went to the audition and wound up getting the part.”

Originally conceived by series creator William Bell as a scheming Black Widow-type murderess, the character of Cassandra became more nuanced — and far more compelling — as her role expanded.

In the  1990 “Bermuda Triangle” storyline, haunted architect Cassandra Rawlins is meeting a mysterious stranger called  Adrian Hunter who blackmails her into marriage after she tells him she is desperate to leave Genoa City and start a new life.

Having already committed the perfect crime by-framing Cassandra’s former lover — private detective Paul Williams [Doug Davidson] — for the death of her former husband George,  Cassandra takes off with Adrian for a Bermuda vacation.

But things go downhill fast when she arrives on the island; Cassandra starts hearing the voice of Paul, who she believes has committed suicide.

But Paul — very much alive and actually on the island with his policeman father Carl — are in hot pursuit of the pair. Paul and his dad torment Cassandra — who they still believe may have been involved in her husband’s murder — by staging a series of ghostly visions of Paul to try and send her over the edge.

To make matter worse Adrian is plotting to kill Cassandra so he can inherit the George Rawlins multi-million dollar estate.

The show made a great choice for its first shoot outside the United States,” said Ms Arvesen. “This was my first opporrtunity to get to go to Bermuda.

“The trip to Bermuda was the ultimate adventure for me — I think Bermuda is the most beautiful island in the world! And I still receive thousands of fan letters and emails from fans all over the world who want to see ‘The Young and the Restless’ return to the Bermuda to for another storyline .”

CBS Studio Centre, located in Studio City, California, shipped the cast and crew and a dozen truckloads of equipment to Bermuda for the location shoot.

“Life in Bermuda was great, I really enjoyed it,” said Ms Arvesen. “I was lucky enough to work in Bermuda for for 10 days.

“But it was hard work. The cast and crew actually worked 18 hours a day in Bermuda. After we first arrived in Bermuda, the shooting of the outdoor scenes had to be cancelled and re-arranged due to a few rainy days.”

Ms Arvesen — who speaks six languages fluently as a result of her peripatetic childhood — said she still looks back with fondness at her days in Bermuda.

“I had an opportunity to meet some of the best people in Bermuda,” she said. “Bermuda truly put me on the map I made headlines in all the newspapers in 1990 when ‘The Bermuda Love Triangle’ achieved the number one ratings status.”

Bermudian Wendi Nixon-Fiedler, whose production house Panatel helped to coordinate the local end of the daytime drama’s Bermuda shoot, said the island not only gained worldwide exposure thanks to the picturesque footage featured in the “Young & The Restless” episodes but also received a welcome boost to the economy.

“I remember this well,” she has posted. “We [ended up] employing 150-plus Bermudians for this production from personal assistants/runners, wardrobe, stylists, camera crew, gaffer, grips, caterers and some serious Bermuda on-camera talent [ranging from veteran hotel and nightclub entertainer Gene Steede to lawyer/playwright Warren Cabral].

“It was demanding and great fun!”

Ms Arvesen — who went on to appear in the NBC soap opera “Santa Barbara” after leaving “The Young & The Restless” — is now retired from acting and runs a dance studio in Santa Monica, California.

But her days in Bermuda are never far from her thoughts — or those of  the legions of “Young & The Restless” fans around the world.

“The’ Bermuda Love Triangle’ storyline and the elaborate George Rawlins murder mystery seems to have made the greatest impact on ‘Young & The Restless’ viewers worldwide who still remember its vivid characters,” she said. “After more than 20 years, the Bermuda plot has demonstrated it still has remarkable staying power!”

Rather sure of herself and determined, in all the cases without states of heart, Angela Raymond is introduced to the televiewers as the wife of judge David Raymond, a friend of C.C. Capwell. This is by the intermediary of an article that he is writing for his newspaper, that she makes the knowledge of Warren Lockridge, with who she falls in love at once. The couple she forms with David is going to its end since now many years and each one knows that this is nothing more but a question of month before occures the divorce. What does not prevent Angela from being jealous when David tries (in vain) to seduce his colleague Julia Wainwright...

But it is in all the cases with Warren that Angela finds happiness. Until the evening when, awaked by the sound of a shot, she discovers on her balcony Warren, directing a rifle in the direction of the building welcoming all the jet set of Santa Barbara for a reception. Lies on the floor Amado Alvarez, just dead, whereas it seems obvious that the bullet was intended for Mason Capwell. Angela, at the beginning suspicious towards Warren, agrees to believe in his innocence. And whereas this one is arrested and put in prison, she decides to investigate on her own. By viewing one by one the photos taken at the party, she locates the only person missing at the time of the shot : Craig Hunt. She then tries to approach him to bring to light his culpability, but Craig understands her small play and obliges her to write a suicide letter where she must confess to be the murderer. But she is saved at the last moment by Cruz Castillo and Warren.

Whereas her divorce with David is finally pronounced, Angela discovers her rival in the heart of Warren in the person of Cassandra Benedict, his old great love. She passes close to dead when she misses eating some soup poisoned by Cassandra, become insane of jealousy, and finds herself thereafter confronted with a drama of her past : the death of her sister Marilyn. Nervously driven out of patience by Cassandra who discovered the truth, Angela acknowledges to have been at the wheel when Marilyn had her mortal car accident years ago. After a bad fall, Angela however receives the visit of the spirit of her sister who urges her to forgive herself the accident.

The affair regulated, Angela can now totally concentrate to her passion : men ! Giving up Warren, she first lives a torrid passion with Ted Capwell, who forsakes for her his girlfriend Katrina Ruyker. But surprised in bed by Katrina, Angela and Ted are constrained to take a little distance one towards the other. Even if Ted pretends to be interested in Lily Blake to make Angela jealous, this one has from now onward another target in head : the own father of Ted, C.C. ! Taking their relation very seriously, C.C. asks Angela to marry him, but reconsiders his proposal when his great love Sophia is found again unmarried after her widowhood. Ted having finally married Lily and Warren dating B.J. Walker, Angela thus finds herself alone and vexed, without no clue on her future being revealed at the end of the show...

Exclusive interview Actress Nina Arvesen
Who Would Leave A Good Job, Family
And Friends To Pursue An Acting Career In The States?
A Norwegian Bombshell Would.

Nina Arvesen is battling with a trash can she is trying to prop in the doorway of her SANTA BARBARA dressing room. The trash can
seems to be winning until she gives it a good kick and jams it firmly into the
door frame. Now, she's ready to talk.
Arvesen isn't taping today, and it's clear that she and alter ego Angela
have little in common in the way of everyday dress. Arvesen's hair is without
Angela's trademark Farrah Fawcett curls, the actress's makeup is minimal,
and her black jeans and loose-knit shirt are a far cry from Angela's sophisti-
cated, fitted suits. Arvesen makes no fashion statements that might betray
her personality; no clues lie amid her dressing room decor. Unless she
shoved stuff under sofa cushions before the interview, the room is devoid of
personal items - no personal glossies, no photos of flames or friends, no
Norwegian mementos or trinkets that might divulge the real Arvesen.
In conversation, Arvesen - adept at noncommittal doublespeak where
her personal and professional lives are concerned - is equally unrevealing.
Perhaps as insurance, she makes it clear from the start that she can only
offer a half hour of her time. But as the conversation goes well past the thirty-
minute mark, she loosens up, occasionally laughs and even fields questions
about her questionable departure from THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS,
where she played Cassandra until the character was suddenly killed.
Arvesen's leaving Y&R, in February 1990, caused no bad feelings; her
contract was up. "It was really a matter of storyline. From [Y&R Executive
Producer and Creator] Bill Bell's viewpoint and mine, it was fine," she says.
"You're part of the big picture, and the whole puzzle has to fit, you know?"
The SB role is, in many ways, a complete switch from Y&R's Cassandra.
That character was "more naive, sheltered, and inexperienced in life and
love. Angela is much more self-confident and aggressive. I like not being so
timid," says the actress, who describes herself as both "outgoing and shy,"
but' 'working on it. I also enjoy the cast here. I prefer to work at a place where
people are nice to each other and where the negative is kept in check."
Off-hours are very different from Y&R, Arvesen concedes. "There are a
lot of single people, and [sometimes] we hang out more than we did at Y&R.
We go on ski trips. Maria [Ellingsen, Katrina] and Nic [Coster, Lionel] and I
boat together. He's a diving instructor; Maria and I are getting certified."
It's something new, but newness is old hat for Arvesen. As the offspring of
On Y&R, Arvesen worked closely with Mark
Derwin (Adrian; now Mallet, GUIDING LIGHT).
a Norwegian career diplomat, Arvesen and
her brothers, Jannik and Christian, lived all
over the world and experienced an eclectic
mix of cultures. Born in White Plains, New
York, Arvesen spent her early years in
Egypt, Brazil, New York and Norway.
It was at age twenty-four, however, that
she made it to sunny Southern California.
The desire to perform was always there;
right after high school graduation in Nor-
way, Arvesen joined Dizzy Tunes, a Norwe-
gian musical revue troupe. But a backstage
fall down two flights of stairs put the danc-
ing career on hold, and she became an on-
camera host - and behind-the-scenes
jack-of-all-trades - of a current affairs se-
ries, SCANDINAVIAN WEEKLY.
"It got to the point where I was estab-

lished in Norway, but it is a small industry
[with] only about ten major pictures made a
year," she says. "I thought, 'If I am going to
move to the States, I need to do it now or I'll
get too comfortable.' I packed all my stuff
and left. Everyone thought I was crazy."
Arvesen lived with friends in L.A. for a
month before moving to Venice and selling
cowhides at a Southwest-style furniture
store. Finally, she won small roles - the
film Dragnet, a TV movie and a few series
- obtained her Screen Actors Guild card
and eventually landed Y&R.
Arvesen's family is in Oslo - a thirteen-
hour plane ride from L.A. - so she sees
them whenever they happen to be in town.
In fact, her parents recently visited so that
mother and daughter could celebrate their
shared birthday. "My birthday was proba-
bly different from [other people's] birthdays
because it was the two of us," Arvesen
says. "In that sense, there is a very special
relationship between us. My mom was my
best friend when we were growing up, and
she's become more and more so again
over the last four years."
Fortunately, Arevesen seems to manage
to find peace living in L.A., and it seems her
life - that of a single, working woman -
suits her just fine ....

Nina Arvesen is surely one of the more re-
luctant interviewees to come down the Hol-
lywood pike. She's the daughter of Nor-
way's current ambassador to Central
America, holds both American and Norwe-
gian citizenships, served as boss-lady at a
TV station, ran a big-time record label and
... well, for heaven's sake, she's got a
background that pales compared to most
other sudstresses.

Arvesen grew up around the world. Born
in America, she has, at various times, lived
long stretches in New York, Egypt, Norway
and Brazil, as well as short stretches just
about every place else. As a result, she's
accent-free.
"The first language I actually learned
was Brazilian Portuguese," she remem-
bers. "I knew a little bit of English and a lit-
tle bit of Norwegian - both with a heavy
Portuguese accent." Her parents are sta-
tioned in Costa Rica. An older brother, after
graduating from Yale, returned to Norway
to toil in the stock market. Her younger
brother studies film at the University of Tex-
as in Austin. First names of the members of
the Arvesen clan are, noticeably, left unre-
vealed. They do, for the record, get togeth-
er in some corner of the globe at least once
a year. "At least," she says, "we try."
Her first professional performing gig
(with a revue form unique to Scandinavia,
mixing skits of comedy, music and drama)
landed in her lap while she was still in a
Norwegian high school. "An hour after my
last exam," Nina remembers, "I was on a
train headed out of town for rehearsals.
Opening night was a week later." The in-
stant career boost was not as lucky as it
might appear to show biz strugglers in the
USA. "Everything is on a much smaller
scale there," she explains. "There's no
such thing as competition. There are no
unions to get into, no agents. You repre-
sent yourself. If you are an actress in Nor-
way, you are an actress. You work all the
time whereas, in America, you can be an
actress and still be a waitress most of the
time. But, even there, you have to be diver-
sified."
An understatement. Though it's hard to
imagine Arvesen - she of the exquisite
cheekbones and toothsome smile - wast-
ed on anything other than acting. She, in
fact, often scored big behind the cameras.
Besides masterminding a Norwegian TV
station, she's subtitled American films and
even opened the first RCA/Motown affili-
ate there. "In the course of three years,
that company went from two employees to
over forty. We were the first to introduce
audiences to such country artists as Kenny
Rogers, Dolly Parton and Alabama." De-
spite her expertise, she's had no interest in
pursuing such businesses stateside.

was among the first to audition for
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL when its
premiere cast was being assembled but
failed to make the grade. She also tried out
for an earlier role on V&R. But which? "I
don't know," she says. "I have a bad mem-
ory for such things."
Casting Director Jill Wilson, who presid-
ed over both of these attempts, and even-
tually picked her for the Cassandra role, re-
flects, "Initially, she wasn't quite ready, but
Nina studied really hard, took it very seri-
ously and her work paid off." Most would-
be actresses possessing the unique and
extraordinary looks of Arvesen, she says,
would try first for the big screen or, at the
very least, prime time. "Certainly not the
ones who look like she does and can act,
chew gum and walk at the same time," Wil-
son continues. "But not Nina."
More than content to be tied up with a
long-term soap role, the actress didn't
even mind dying her naturally-Nordic blond
hair to a less-than-distinguished brown.
"Which was a shame," says the casting
expert. "Her hair was gorgeous, but it had
to be done. There were too many blondes
on the show already." Gradually, as a few
of Y&R's fair-haired lasses reached for the
Clairol bottle to go darker, the execs have
allowed Arvesen to return to a shade closer
to her own.
While the star avows that the cast greet-
ed her arrival with open arms (at Y&R,
which rarely gets character additions, a
fresh face can seem like flowers in the de-
sert)

It's quite clear that Arvesen is enjoying this soap
role, which came on the heels of her abrupt dismissal
from The Young and the Restless last February. A key
player on that show for three years, Arvesen's Cas-
sandra Rawlins died in a car crash, to the surprise of
viewers and industry insiders. It was such a shock to
fans, in fact, that the Y&K press people had to con-
vince viewers that the actress was indeed alive and
well, just no longer working in Genoa City.
"I wasn't surprised," Arvesen says of her charac-
ter's demise. "That's what happens to everyone.
When you come on a show and create a character, it's
a crap shoot. So many things have to work. You have
to have chemistry with and work off the already es-
tablished actors. Storylines have to work and be to so
many different people's liking - directors, produc-
ers .... You can only do your job and hope it will
work out.
"My contract was up," she continues. "It was time
to move on. It's something that was mutually good
for everybody. I think in a lot of ways Cassandra had
run her course. I'd worked with so many of the lead-
ing actors on the show. It was difficult to fit Cassandra
into the whole jigsaw puzzle that fit together.
"You can't take it personally. You have to look at it
as a business. (Executive producer) Bill Bell treated
me very well. He had originally only intended to keep
me for a year. Then, I signed a, three-year contract.
1 fulfilled my contract. That was the best that I could
hope for."
Four months later, Arvesen joined SB. "I had a
meeting with Paul Rauch (SB's executive producer).
To my benefit, he was familiar with my work on Y&K.
He offered me the part. That was about it," she says.
"I started the beginning of July."1991
Though many daytime actors want to go to an-
other medium, Arvesen thoroughly enjoys the soap
world. "It's steady work. It's constantly challenging. It
keeps you on your toes. I like the pace of it," she
explains. "I like the fact that you don't sit around and
wait too much. It keeps your energy level going. It
keeps your instrument in tune."
Comparing Angela to Y&K's Cassandra, Arvesen
says, "Superficially, there are similarities between the
two. They're both wealthy, glamorous." But Arvesen
believes the two characters are essentially quite dif-
ferent. "Cassandra was very much a victim of circum-
stances all the time. Things happened to her: She lost
her parents early on, her husband had been impo-
tent, her husband died, she met Paul (Doug David-
son) and he went after her. All these things hap-
pened to her all the time, and she was surviving them
until she died," she laughs.
In contrast, Angela is more of a control freak who's
had to do some serious thinking about her future,
heavy-duty thinking to which Arvesen can relate. "I
turned 30 last May," she says, "and I'd have to say that
I kind of picked my life up and looked at it." While
she wouldn't exactly label that milestone birthday as
traumatic, she does admit that parts of it were diffi-
cult. "When you re-evaluate things you have to say,
'You're 30 now. Where's your life? What are you doing
with it?' I think I [asked myself] a lot of the same
questions that a lot of women - working women my
age who are single - have. You think about children
and all those things," she says simply.
"There were a lot of things going on in my life at
that point," she continues. "[I learned] that my man-
ager - the man I've been with for the last five years
- has inoperable brain cancer. He's been going for
radiation treatments for the last seven months. He's
hanging in there - he's strong. Then, there are peo-
ple I know about who are dealing with AIDS .... That
all kind of came together around me the same time
I turned 30.
"I'm very happy with the way my life is," Arvesen
says, indicating that she's a long way from the woman
who made her daytime acting debut in 1988. "I'm a
different person than I was then. I'm more self-confi-
dent. I've made some changes in my life. I'm living a
healthier life now than I was three years ago. I'm
working out on a regular basis now. And I stopped
drinking two years ago. I didn't go to Betty Ford;
I didn't go to Alcoholics Anonymous or anything like
that. I just quit ....
"I made choices about what was important in my
life," she says. "I'm more aware of that now and about
what I want to spend my time doing than 1 was.
Three years ago, I was fumbling in the dark trying to
figure things out. Now, I have a clearer direction of
where I'm going with different things." ★

WHO IS
Actress Nina Arvesen?
UP CLOSE WITH
Nina Arvesen
Y&R's MYSTERY LADY!

Lovely Nina Arvesen, who is
played Cassandra Rawlins, is a
fascinating actress with an
exotic background of her own that
could probably match anything the
writers come up with for her part
on Young & Restless.

Arvesen landed her two most
prominent acting roles as
Cassandra Rawlins on The
The Young and the Restless
and as Angela Cassidy Raymond
on the television series Santa Barbara.

This young girl was born in New
York but is also Norwegian, the
daughter of the Norwegian Am-
bassador to Costa Rica. She grew
up in Egypt, Brazil and New York
and speaks Norwegian and
English fluently, understands
Swedish and Danish and had
seven years of French and Ger-
man in school.
"Let me get this straight, you
moved to New York when you were
eight and left at fourteen to go to
Norway where you stayed for 10
years, right?" I asked Nina.
"Yes, I'm very much both
American and Norwegian. I have
dual citizenship. The time in New
York was a very important part of
my life. We lived in Scarsdale and
they have an incredible school
system. Yes, then I was in Norway
for ten years. I started working
when I was sixteen."
"What did you start doing?"
"Theatre."
"And your parents liked that?"
"Oh, yes. They've always been
very supportive. My mother was an
actress in her youth before she met
my father and had to give up her
career, I guess, to join him travel-
ing around the world. Yes, they've
always been for it and the same
time, I guess tried to discourage

me as much as possible."
"Where are they now?"
"My father's presently Norway's
Ambassador to Central America
and is stationed in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is one of the most
beautiful countries in the world,"
she added.
"You went on your own very
young then," I suggested.
"Well, I'd finished high school
and started working, then they
moved and I moved out. My father
was stationed in Mexico for six
years before Central America."
"Did you take acting courses?"
"Well, I've danced ballet and
classical ballet, modern jazz and I
was about three and played the
piano, so I was always involved in
something like that. I was into
amateur plays and school plays."
"Is there much opportunity over
there?"
"In Norway? Certainly, there's
opportunity. We have a very fine
theatre, some wonderful films
made there. The problem is that it
is a small country and the industry
is very small."
"So you came back here," I
started.
"Two and a half years ago. I kind
of left my career in Norway and
people thought I was kind of crazy
because I really didn't know where
to start here. I had no connections.

I had no idea how to go about it,
but little by little I met some people
and I got representation and they
started sending me out."
"Right. So what did you do first?"
"Starve like everyone. I guess
the first job I did was a couple of
commercials and a couple of low
budget films. The first big break
was a small part in Dragnet op-
posite Tom Hanks. It's the final
scene in the movie."
"So you came straight out to
California when you returned."
"Yes, this is where I got
representation, then I just started,
you know, once you get through
the Catch 22 of getting a SAG card
and all, just going through it."
"Was it hard?"
"Yes. I think so."
"Did you have to work at
anything else while you were trying?"
"Yes. I worked at a video produc-
tion company for awhile. I sold fur-
niture. What else did I do? I sold
cars for a little while, or I tried to
sell cars. Yes, and waitressing and
then by that time I started getting
enough work to be able to support
myself."
Friends helped Nina get an
apartment and Nina brought some
stuff from Norway to furnish it. She
went back and got rid of her apart-
ment there, her car and shipped
her few belongings on a boat. Nina
had been reading for parts on
Young & Restless and The Bold
And The Beautiful for about a
year and a half, then this part of
Cassandra came up and they
called her in for it.
"Terrific, I kept seeing your back
in the beginning. They sort of
sneaked you in for a week or so," I
told her.
"Yes, that's what my mother
said. My brother goes to the
University of Texas and they were
visiting him this weekend and I
sent a few tapes for them to see. I
wrote them a long letter and said,
'please, be nice. Look at it and
criticize me but take into con-
sideration I've only been on three
times,' and all that stuff. My mother
said, 'I kept seeing your back.'"
We laughed. "Turn around Nina,
turn around," I agreed with her
mother's feelings.
"They brought me in as kind of a
street lady and I'm supposed to be
mysterious and people really don't
know very much about me yet."
"You have no idea what you're
so mysterious about?"
"Oh, I know. I know."
"When am I going to know?" I
asked.
"I guess it will take a little while.
But I guess Paul has to start
wondering, doesn't he?" she said.
"I would think so because he's a
private investigator among other
things."
"Exactly."
"Well, I guess with the writers'
strike and everything they'll have
the two of you dancing around and
kissing forever," I mused.
"Yes, it was nice though with the
music and everything," Nina said
laughing.
"So how is it working on the
show?"
"Everybody's very friendly real-
ly. I feel very comfortable already.
They've been very sweet to me
and from what I hear it's the best
set you can be on. It's very nice.
They're very relaxed. I like it."
"Do you have any beauty tips for
me?"
"Beauty tips? Oh, God. Oh, my
God. That's funny. I don't know. I
guess take care of yourself and
listen to your body."
Do you do anything to keep your
body thin and stuff?"
"Sure. I work out. I run and
when I was staying in Venice, I
used to roller skate a lot."
"What kind of food do you eat?"
"I eat everything."
"Have you ever been in love?"
"Of course. I was about eight
years old and I fell in love with my
gym teacher," she said laughing.
"That doesn't have any place to
go. I think that line of questioning
was doomed," I told her.
"I do too."
"Let's see, what do you think is
the most important thing in a rela-
tionship between two people?"
"Oh, I think trust."
"Do you have any animals?"
"I have a dog who sounds much
more fierce than he really is. He's 12.''
"And you've been lugging him
around?"
"No, he's my boy friend's dog
actually, well, it's ours."
"Oh, you do live with a guy?"
"Yes."
"And are you in love now?"
"Yes."
"That's nice, what is the dog's
name then?"
"Nipper, he'saPuli, a
Hungarian sheep dog. He's a little
black furball. My boy friend found
him when he was about two
months old. Someone had
dropped him in a dumpster."
"Thank heavens he found a
good home and someone who
saved him," I told her.
"Can you cook?"
"Actually, I love to. My boy friend
gave me a subscription to Gourmet
magazine for Christmas. And I got
a letter from a lady who sent me a
bunch of clippings from magazines
with menus and roast beef and
stuff."
"Do you have any hobbies?"
"You know, I used to think about
that and I guess what used to be
my hobby has now become my job,
so yes, I like to play piano and I
love music. I try to sing, I'm taking
lessons. I take acting lessons too."
Nina loves shopping but hasn't
done much since she moved here
until a couple of weeks ago. She
finally had to because she had lost
35 pounds.
"How did you do that?"
"Will power. Will power. I just
looked at myself. Not one day. It
was a gradual process but finally I
was fed up and made up my mind
to lose weight. I started working
out and being very careful what I
ate. I have a high metabolism so
I've always been very skinny. Then
I moved over here and because I
wasn't doing anything every day, I
was spending so much time
waiting around I just put on weight.
I got it down again it's no problem.
I keep busy now too."
Nina and her boyfriend keep up
with most movies and a lot of TV.
He's in the business too. She loves
anyplace where there is sun and
beach and not too many people.
Evidently, they both do. They both
love the sea.
It was time for Nina to go back to
work. I still haven't found out why
she is such a mystery woman,
hopefully by now you'll all know!

Actress Nina Arvesen On Location WithY&R THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS's Murder Story Sent Four Actors to the Sunny Isle of Bermuda. Bup This Location Shoot Wasn't All Fun in the Sun.... For almost a year, the murder mystery THE YOUN6 AND THE RESTLESS's wealthy, vindictive George Rawlins kept viewers guessing. Did George's gorgeous, much younger wife, Cassandra, have him rubbed out? Had Cassandra's anxious se- cret lover, Adrian, done the deed? Was it suicide? Or had some other demon com- mitted foul play? To showcase the long«- awaited climax of Y&h's carefully con- structed tale, the soap shipped four actors, a crew and dozens of trunks to the sunny island of Bermuda. A Soap Opera Digeit editor followed, to get the inside story. The story line called for Cassandra and Adrian — both suspects in George's mur- der — to escape from Genoa City, with Paul and his father, Carl, in pursuit. Why did Cali- fornia-based Y&R travel all the way to Ber- muda, when there are so many beautiful" lo- cations much closer by? "We needed a lo- cation for Cassandra and Adrian was out of the country," explained associate producer Nancy Wiard, who served as pro- duction supervisor on the shoot. "We con- sidered various spots in California, but we wanted a more international feel." Execu- tive producer Ed Scott, who was in charge of the remote, had been to Bermuda the previous summer and liked what he saw: "I knew the place and I had some contacts, so it wasn't like coming to a place cold." The news that they'd be traveling to Ber- muda delighted three out of the four Y&R stars chosen for the trip. When Ed Scott told Brett Hadley (Carl) he'd be going, Had- here we are at the beach all day. I can think of two places in particular I'd not rather be, and that's [Y&R's] stages 41 and 43!" Despite the beauty of their surroundings, cast and crew didn't spend lazy afternoons lounging on the beach. Workdays started early and ended late. "Sleep is not always a priority," Davidson disclosed. Nina Arve- sen concurred, estimating sixteen- to eigh- teen-hour days for cast and crew — except for the first day, when outdoor shots had to be canceled due to rain. Davidson and Hadley took advantage of the delay and visited the aquarium, where, Davidson ley couldn't believe it. He said he told Scott, "If you're pulling my leg, I'll tear your head off! Don't tell me that unless you mean it." Mark Derwin (Adrian) was still in a happy fog that he'd joined the cast. Making the trip "was like icing," he remembered. "Ev- eryone who stayed home was jealous," claimed Nina Arvesen (Cassandra). Only Doug Davidson (Paul) would admit to mixed feelings — he had to leave his sev- en-and-a-half months pregnant wife, Cin- dy, at home. "I love to go on location," Da- vidson said, "but they don't like pregnant women to fly." Still, added Davidson, "I really enjoy it; it's great getting out. I mean, quipped, "We saw what we eat here — all the fish specials were in the aquarium." (The weather held up for the rest of the week.) There were other snafus to contend with, from helicopters drowning out dialogue to the hours and hours devoted to setting up lighting. As much as Ed Scott appreciated the beauty of Bermuda, he surely missed the much easier conditions of working in a studio. Comparatively little time was spent actually taping actors saying their lines — it took hours to get the lighting just right. "The studio is more controlled," said Scott. "The lighting is set up ahead of time. [In Bermuda], each place has to be lit sepa- rately as we go. That's what takes forever." And makeup required extra care, too. Brian McManus, one of two freelance makeup artists hired for the trip, said continuity is always a problem on remotes in sunny places. Actors were cautioned about get- ting too much color, since scenes were taped out of sequence and the deep tan they might have gotten at the end of the trip would look out of place if the scenes shot at the end of the week aired first. Some of the scenes that appeared to have been taken in Bermuda were actually shot back in Los Angeles. A hotel room set was constructed in the California studio so Y&R didn't have to waste valuable time shooting interiors that could be duplicated. However, the hotel lobby, bar and shops were the genuine articles. "Being able to ride a carriage down Main Street, dancing under the stars at night, being in a cafe or beach-side — all are things you can't do in a studio," said Wiard. According to Brett Hadley, keeping track of everything was a bit bewildering. "It's very confusing keep- ing everything straight," he revealed, "be- cause we have a great deal of interior stuff to do back at the studio. It's going to be weeks apart from the time you come storm- ing up to the front door to the time you walk in the front door!" It was also months prior to Christmas when Y&R traveled to Bermuda, but the scenes they were shooting were going to air during the holidays. That meant hauling trunkloads of Christmas cheer to the trop- ics. "We had to bring Christmas trees, lots of garland, poinsettias, reams and reams of ribbon and little gold stars," said Nancy Wiard. In a way, the scenes were a kind of holiday gift to the viewers. "One of the rea- sons we wanted to be in a tropical locale is that when everyone is freezing in the east- ern portion of the US, it's kind of nice to turn on the television set and see somewhere nice and warm, and beautiful bodies," said Wiard. Ed Scott was more blunt. Asked about what Y&R wanted from the expedi- tion, he grinned, "To show a lot of skin!" Yet another factor in Bermuda's favor was its positive tourism climate. "They are so thrilled to be hosting us, something you don't see as much in the States," enthused Wiard. "Everyone is ex- cited because it's their island, that it's their country we have select- ed to come to, and tour- ism is the most impor- tant business in Bermu- da." Also helpful was the fact that Y&R is a top-rated show in Ber- muda — Nina Arve- sen's photo made the front page of the local paper. Everyone from the premier to the minister of tourism to the locals were eager to help. Though the actors on the remote had to cope with mobs of fans, all men- tioned with wonderment the graciousness of their admirers. "They genuinely love the show, so it's a joy to sign an autograph," said Doug Davidson. "You really have to think about crowd control but with people that are so polite it's easy. There are no ropes, no security. You ask them once [to • move] and they oblige." Brett Hadley agreed. "In other places when there's a mob of people you have to kind of keep an eye out, but here you feel perfectly safe." Despite the company's demands on ho- tel guests and local residents (areas had to be blocked off during taping — like the cafe where Paul and Carl spied on Cassandra, and the bar where Adrian and Cass stopped in — and an entire street had to be lit during the carriage sequence), Y&R got complete cooperation. One Bermuda resi- dent, watching a scene that used one of his friends as an extra, said the only regret he'd heard from the locals was that "we all couldn't be in it!" And the guests who were inconvenienced didn't seem put out at all. actor's doorstep. Ambushed, an amused Davidson admitted the teens and the group had a lively chat about goings-on in Genoa City. Though the women in the group were satisfied with the encounter, the boys want- ed more. Davidson obliged — during taping later, Davidson called over Nina Arvesen and introduced her to the impressed fans. Though they were playing scenes crucial to the murder story, none of the actors knew which character had killed George Rawlins. Ed Scott knew, but he wasn't talk- ing. "That's like opening your Christmas presents a week before Christmas!" Scott chastised an eager questioner. "The ac- tors always want to know. I say, 'Look, act- ing on a daytime drama is like real life — One couple from Maine, celebrating their anniversary, weren't Y&R fans but enjoyed the taping anyway. As for any bother they experienced, the couple shrugged, "We just work around it." The Bermudans were rewarded for their cooperative spirit by grateful actors. Sever- al locals were overheard commenting on the friendliness and accessibility of the stars. In fact, some overeager teen-agers bribed a bellhop to tell them Doug David- son's room number, and showed up on the you don't know what's going to happen from day to day.'" Davidson likened the experience of not knowing the identity of the murderer, to he and his wife's not know- ing the sex of their baby. Everything Ed Scott says about the story, and Cindy's doctor says about the baby, could have sig- nificance. "It's different knowing that they know," laughed Davidson. "[When they say something] you kind of go, 'I wonder what that means____ One possible suspect in the murder wasCassandra, but Nina Arvesen staunchly u defended her character. Although Arve- sen didn't know who the murderer was, she didn't think Cassie could have killed George. "I am certain she loved George," said Arvesen. "I don't think she killed her husband. I know she loved Paul very much, but I think somewhere along the way Paul disappointed her, or the whole murder mys- tery confused her so much, that guilt took over to such a degree that she didn't feel she could love him anymore." Have Arve- sen's theories about the story changed as the tale has progressed? "Oh gosh, yes!" exclaimed the actress. "What fascinates me is every time I think the story line has come to an end, the writers manage to find another twist." Mark Derwin had to face the fact that the fate of his character, Adrian, didn't look good — many viewers pinned the blame for George's death on Cassan- dra's shady lover. Still, Derwin tried to think positive, and came up with some ideas that would keep Adrian around. "Evil twin broth- er, George committed suicide, Adrian was an undercover cop — I come up with any- thing," he laughed. "But even if I die, I got great experience." A week in Bermuda was a welcome break in routine for Y&R's cast and crew, and the fruit of their labor was a refreshing change for viewers. A romantic carriage ride, sexy beach scenes, glorious ocean shots — what was the most enjoyable as- pect of the location work? Replied Ed Scott (who, when asked, was in the middle of re- scheduling yet another day's shooting):

Day Job Never Boring For 'Restless' Star Nina Arvesen !

Friday, May 24, 2013

NEW YORK — During her two-and-a-half-year stint as the beautiful and mysterious Cassandra Hunter on the daytime soap The Young and the Restless, actress Nina Arvesen assures you of one thing - she has never been bored.

''I've gotten to do so many really outrageous things,'' says Arvesen. ''Cassandra has had a gun pointed at her head, she's been drugged, she's been spied on and she's been manipulated. Cassandra has gone through so many changes, with her husband dying and the murder mystery that followed, and all her lovers. So much has been piled on her. And I've enjoyed all of it.''

Arvesen believes that the constant merry-go-round her character has been on is what has kept viewers hooked.

''I don't think the audience really knows who Cassandra is,'' says Arvesen. ''They never know what she will do next. Cassandra is very impulsive. I think that's what makes her fun to watch.''

Originally cast as the killer in the show's elaborate George Rawlins murder mystery, the talented Arvesen somehow managed to turn story plans around.

''I know that was (Young and Restless creator) Bill Bell's original intent when he cast me. But then, as the story line went along, he decided to change it. I hope that some of that can be attributed to my portrayal of the character.''

A novice when she first joined The Young and the Restless, Arvesen readily admits that she is a much stronger and more confident actress today.

''How could I not be?'' she says. ''I'm working at it every day. That's where daytime really doesn't get the acknowledgment it should. (Soap actors) are constantly working, fine tuning and having to grow to keep their character interesting and the audience interested.

''A lot of out-of-work actors out there snub their noses at daytime. I think that's their loss, because it's really a wonderful place to be. It's given me financial stability in my life and the freedom to do other things, like take acting classes, voice classes and singing classes. I'm very appreciative of that.''

While the actress will discuss her career and work on The Young and the Restless, she shies away from discussing personal matters such as her love life. ''I don't like to talk about things like that,'' she says. ''The only way they stay personal is if you keep them that way.''

Brief Character History
Angela Raymond, the wife of Judge David Raymind, was a strong, cunning, ambitious and strikingly beautiful woman who knew exactly what she wanted. Unfortunately, Angela and David had a troubled marriage, one that started with the coverup of her sister Marilyn's death.

Soon after coming to Santa Barbara, Angela arranged for Warren Lockridge to interview David for his newspaper. She became attracted to Warren and they began a hot affair. Still, Angela had a possessive streak and was jealous of David's interest in Julia Wainwright.

One night, a bullet traveled through Mason Capwell and killed Amado Gonzalez at the Oasis Hotel. Immediately afterwards, a stunned Angela saw Warren on her apartment balcony holding a rifle aimed at the Oasis. Warren and Angela suspected each other of the shooting, but soon realized that neither of them was guilty.

When Warren was tried for the shooting, Angela bravely played up to Craig Hunt to prove he was the real culprit. When Craig caught on, he planned to kill Angela and forced her to write a suicide note in which she confessed to the shooting. Luckily, she was rescued in time by Cruz Castillo and Warren. Eventually, Angela and David got divorced. By then, Angela had fallen in love with Warren.

Trying to buy Warren's love, Angela gave him the Santa Barbara Bulletin. She also purchased an art gallery. Warren became torn between Angela and Cassandra Benedict, his former lover. In the end, he chose Angela. Cassie went mad over the issue and began harassing Angela. She even poisoned Angela's soup. When that didn't work, Cassie exposed the fact that David and Angela were responsible for the car crash that killed Angela's sister Marilyn. Later, when Angela fell off a ladder and was unconscious, Marilyn's spirit urged her to forgive herself for causing Marilyn's death.

Warren and Angela's relationship continued until he fell in love with B.J. Walker. Meanwhile, Angela began a lusty affair with Ted Capwell, who was engaged to Katrina Ruyker at the time. Following a car accident, Angela suffered from amnesia and began working in a diner. She was found by Ted. Later, in Dallas, Angela and Ted were caught in bed together by Katrina. Angela finally got her memory back and dumped Ted. She then cozied up to his father, C.C. Capwell. C.C. proposed to her. However, realizing that C.C. still loved his ex-wife Sophia, Angela broke up with him. It was a friendly parting and the last time we saw Angela.

NINA ARVESEN
Angela Raymond, 1991-93

Nina Arvesen was born on May 16, 1961 in White Plains, New York. The daughter of a Norwegian ambassador, she grew up globetrotting from the U.S. to Egypt, Brazil and Norway. She moved to Hollywood in 1985, after working as an actress in Norway for several years. Her big break came when she got a part in the 1987 movie Dragnet starring Tom Hanks.

Nina's first soap role was in 1987 on Santa Barbara, where she played a rookie policewoman in three episodes. She then wreaked havoc as Cassandra Hall on The Young and the Restless from 1988 to 1991.

Following her dismissal from Y&R, Nina joined the cast of Santa Barbara as Angela Raymond. She stayed with SB until the end of the series.

B'S NINA ARVESEN: LEARNING HER WAY THROUGH DAYTIME

In her five years on daytime TV, SB's Nina Arvesen (Angela) has played two of its most intriguing women. Although some actors look down on soaps, Nina credits them for her remarkable growth as an actress.

"I've never understood the snobbery that exists about acting in soaps," she says. "I think it must stem from ignorance. Anyone who thumbs their nose at daytime simply doesn't know what it is. I have learned to respect everyone from the crew to the actors because it takes so much courage to put yourself out there when there's so little rehearsal and preparation time. That's the challenge of it: You have to put your ego aside and just go for it."

And go for it is just what she did. A show biz veteran in her native Norway - music, dance, acting, producing and scriptwriting credits fill her resume - Nina moved to L.A. After several film and TV-movie roles, she was signed by Y&Rexecutive producer Bill Bell to play her first daytime role as the enigmatic Cassandra. "I appreciated the fact that Bill waited before involving me in a hot storyline because it gave me time to build my confidence," she says. "I was terribly self-conscious at first, but he gave me time to get my bearings."

As her confidence increased, Nina took more and more initiative in defining her character's identity. In fact, she even decided that Cassandra could not have been capable of murdering her husband as was originally intended, and she reflected those emotions in her portrayal. "I think that's an actor's responsibility," she says. "So many people are involved in creating a character that it can become difficult to maintain consistency. I just couldn't believe that a 14-year-old who was taken in and protected by the man who eventually became her husband could wind up killing him."

Despite Nina's success in convincing audiences that Cassandra didn't murder her husband, the character was killed off just as she seemed to have found a new life. "I was very happy with my time on Y&R," reflects Nina, who took the news like the true professional she is. "For storyline reasons, it appeared they might not renew my contract, There was no bitterness, and it wasn't personal; it's just business, and sometimes people don't understand that. It was the end of a very happy working relationship."

The loss of one job quickly resulted in an even better one when Nina met with SB's executive producer Paul Rauch, who wanted her for a new role. "At Y&R, the pace was slower because our storylines took longer, and there was more hands-on direction. But atSB, I'm getting more creative opportunities," she says. "We're allowed to give a lot of personal input, and we spend less time on retakes, so what you see when the camera rolls is reality - our characters living in that moment. That makes it a real challenge. It's also a lot of fun because we have such a talented, diverse, experienced group of people."

Despite her satisfaction with her present character, Nina remains committed to seeing Angela played in a more three-dimensional way. "Angela is a successful businesswoman, but we really haven't seen much of that side of her yet," Nina says. "Perhaps now that they've given her the Los Angeles rebuilding project, I'd like to see her get hands-on involved rather than just being a sex kitten who's been waiting around for Warren (Jack Wagner)."

Although Nina is still interested in exploring other areas of performing, her involvement in soaps has made her more relaxed and self-confident. It's also given her what she describes as "a keener sense of what is needed and what to do." Her new confidence was recently apparant when Nina rehearsed a scene with castmate Jack Wagner. "Jack and I played a scene with some comedy elements to it. It was wonderful and gratifying for me to take material and make people laugh," she says, adding, "Experiences like that make you realize that there's always something new to be learned."

Nina Arvesen, the sexy superwoman
By Alena Prime, Télé Star, 1995

Home Cette page en Français
Sexy, Nina Arvesen is it since she was born ! Lastly, this is her who says it, but one can believe her. By playing Cassandra Hall in The Young and the Restless, she received as many letters than Lauralee Bell from fascinated admirers, hastened, ready to everything to meet her. Born in White Plaines, New York, from Norwegian origin, daughter of an ambassador, she explains that she was chosen by William Bell, the creator-producer of the show, simply because she had "a disconcerting physique". She then was a waitress in a restaurant after having begun on her arrival in Hollywood, in 1987, in the movie of Mankiewicz, Dragnet, with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks. The future hero of Philadelphia had chosen her himself for partner. She appears in the final scene on a Harley-Davidson, dressed as a cop with Tom Hanks behind her. The helmet off, her long fair hair falls on the shoulders. Very erotic. Then, after some mini-roles in episodes of TV shows, she went to castings for The Bold and the Beautiful. In vain. Arrived, for another test, with a skintight dress, not hiding anything, or almost, of her sculptural chest, Nina convinced William Bell, accustomed to the vamps of the Nineties, what makes say to his wife, also producer and full of humour, that he exerts "a dangerous job".

Not as much as Nina Arvesen who, once the glory came - she is one of the most famous actresses of TV shows in Hollywood -, hired a bodyguard for all her displacements. She wants to preserve the adress of her villa of dream, in Santa Monica, the best than she can. She had to give up one of her favorite hobbies : the roller skate along the beach of Venice and the golf close to Los Angeles. She is content, for her form, with one hour of gym each morning in the room installed in the basement. She swears that of her life - she is 33 years old - she never drank only one drop of alcohol, being content with a glass of milk at her waking and, all the day, nonsemi-sparkling water. She also adores the cocktail (fruit-vegetables) which she developed and baptized Nina. It just need to mixer a carrot, a banana, an apple, a pear, parsley and celery. Her friends appreciate. As much as the meals that she always prepares without meat. She holds these food practices from her mother who was "a very beautiful actress".

She gave up her career to follow her husband throughout the world, and in particular in Oslo, where he stayed a long time to work and where Nina spent a part of her adolescence. Norway remains her refuge when she wishes to escape from her fans. Direction Lillehammer, especially. She has even directed the film of the candidature of this town for the Olympic Games, but that year, it is Albertville, France, which was selected. Like she says : "We prepared the ground." Her father is from now on in charge of the polar affairs. Nina has two brothers to who she is very close - "we knew the same nomad childhood, from the United States to Egypt and Brazil, according to the jobs of my father". They live in Norway. One of them, Christian, is a specialist in special effects and he worked on Robocop and JFK. He also created a company of musical production. Enterprising, Nina is it also and she founded The Arvesen Group, to produce TV movies. Nina knows the businesses. In Norway, after having animated during three years a talk show, she managed a label of discs.

Nina, without taking herself for a superwoman, likes to go at the end of everything she undertakes. Her brother, Christian is diabetic. Well knowing the problems that it can create, she takes part in official receptions, conferences that organizes the American Diabetic Association. Many activities which do not prevent her from having a betrothed : Todd Curtis who plays Skip, the cousin photographer of Cricket in The Young and the Restless. They never had a scene to play together. They just crossed each other. Then, they knew each other better at a lunch organized by the fan club of The Young and the Restless. Todd offered a coffee to Nina and they did not leave each other since that. Together, they came to Paris for what they call "a honeymoon before the wedding". There, that was him her bodyguard !

Wearied of Cassandra in The Young and the Restless, Nina left the show in 1990, after three years of shooting : "I found her too young, naive, timid, reserved." She then became, in summer 1991, Angela in Santa Barbara, the wife of judge David Raymond (John Beck) and unfaithful. "My contract arrived at its term, I wanted to change. One then proposed to me a character at the opposite of Cassandra. Angela comes from a well-off environment. Her father is a governor. She is a very ambitious woman, who pushes her husband, a judge, to do politics. As much Cassandra is timid, reserved, anxious, as much Angela is funny, sure of herself, but one can not trust her very much". She would have well continued, but the show stopped in 1993.

SB'S NINA ARVESEN: LEARNING HER WAY THROUGH DAYTIME

After several film and TV-movie roles, she was signed by Y&R executive producer Bill Bell to play her first daytime role as the enigmatic Cassandra.

But at SB, I'm getting more creative opportunities," she says.

Day Job Never Boring For 'Restless' Star
October 5, 1990|By Nancy M. Reichardt, United Feature Syndicate
